The Communications Center is located inside the Enumclaw Police Department and consists of 6 Communications Officers and 1 Communications Supervisor. The center operates 24/7 and provides call-receiving and dispatching services for the Enumclaw Police Department. We also provide after-hours services for Mt. Rainier National Park. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 18 years of age or older at time of hire.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Ability to accurately read, speak and hear the English language.
  • An applicant may be considered an “Experienced Candidate” if they have been a full-time emergency services dispatcher within the past 6 months of the date the application is received.
  • An applicant may be considered a “Lateral Candidate” if they have completed their CTO and probationary training with their current employer, and hold all certifications required for the job classification.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Call-receive and dispatch police emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Maintain contact with Officers to ensure their status and safety.
  • Answer business line inquiries and assist citizens in the lobby with CPL applications, fingerprint services and bail collections.
  • Enter, locate and clear ACCESS entries for warrants, court orders, stolen vehicles, etc.
  • Monitor department video surveillance for the building and Enumclaw City Jail.
  • Dispatch after hours city services to include the gas and water departments.
  • Dispatch for Mt. Rainier National Park after hours.

 

REQUIRED ABILITIES

  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism when dealing with the public, Department and City personnel.
  • Speak and enunciate clearly on the phone and radio.
  • Accurately read computer screens with varying background colors, fonts and font sizes.
  • Simultaneously hear and understand phone and radio traffic via headset or external speakers.
  • Quickly navigate around the keyboard and type using numbers and symbols.
  • Accurately document information received via radio and phone.
  • Work through complex tasks involving multiple phone and radio systems.
  • Read and interpret various maps of the City and surrounding areas.
  • Maintain composure and control of self and voice under high pressure and stressful situations.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Establish positive working relationships with Department members.
  • Follow policy and/or direction regardless of personal opinions.
  • Work in an environment where skills and performance are evaluated, commended and corrected as necessary.

 

SCHEDULE

  • Schedule consists of four 12 hour shifts, followed by four consecutive days off. Since this is a scheduled 48 hour work week, 8 hours of overtime is earned each week.
  • Rotate shifts every three months between day shift (0700 – 1900), grave (1900 – 0700) and cover (1300-0100).
  • Subject to callback, shift extension or shift changes with little notice.
  • Must be prepared to work your scheduled shift.
  • Often work as the only Communications Officer on duty.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The Communications Center is inside the Enumclaw Police Department and has a window to the lobby.
  • As a Communications Officer you will be public facing and required to provide in person customer service.
  • As part of the Police Department and near other City buildings, you will interact with PD administrative staff, patrol officers, corrections officers and other City employees including the Mayor and City Administrator.
  • Depending on the time of day there may be frequent interruptions with employees coming and going from the Communications Center.
  • The nature of the work requires a person to be inside the Communications Center at all times. Other department personnel can provide bathroom breaks, but you will be unable to leave the building unless a second Communications Officer is on duty.
  • Your workspace contains three phone/radio console positions, a small kitchenette and space for personal items.
